What makes up the Q-room?

The Q-room is a live, synchronous, distance learning environment. Compare how the Q-room stacks up against a live classroom and the typical asynchronous distance learning environment.

Quopax truly believes in the motto, "form follows function". A Q-room tool must serve a specificeducational need to be included in the "live tool bundle" . The "Wow, cool" of a new technological does not weigh heavy into the reasoning of why a tool should or should not be added. New tools are only added if it benefits the educational process. The major features of the Q-room are:

Multi-user audio
Whiteboard
Live multi-user video
Screen, Browser and Application Sharing
Marker
Moodle (LMS)
Custom Email System
All Services Hosted

Multi-user audio

The Q-room's VOIP audio feature allows everyone to talk to each other in real-time. VOIP is a live conferencing environment used over the Internet intead of over phone lines. The sound quality of any VOIP product is of the utmost importance. Voices must be able to be heard well over a low bandwidth Internet connection. Quopax understands that in some cases the student user will be on a limited budget, thus an inexpensive 56k dial-up connection has to work. Q-rooms.com anticipates the worst case scenario of connectivity and equipment and makes sure that even the worst case still functions. (Except for the video component, broadband is required)

One major educational advantage of the Q-room's audio over other similar products is that it has seven separate audio rooms in one main classroom. The advantage of this feature is that it allows for small-group discussions to take place in many different rooms at the same time. Students are able to "break away" from the main classroom and into small groups to complete assignments, study together, or practice presentations.

Whiteboard

The Q-room whiteboard is a live, interactive, online whiteboard. All participants can draw, type, upload images, and much more. The value of being able to present information in real time is priceless to the learning process. An added feature that we believe is once again unique to the Q-room is that for every Cloudspeak room (audio room) there is a whiteboard. So, when small groups are discussing they have a way of visually displaying their ideas. Then if required by the lesson plan each group can then immediately present their ideas to the rest of the group in the form of a presentation.

Live multi-user video

The Q-room can accommodate almost any configuration of video that an institution would need. Two standards are included in the typical Q-room environment, broadcasting one to many and a multi-camera, multi-user environment. The synchronous world's historical experiences have shown that video is most effectively used in specific educational circumstances as when hosting a guest lecturer or when live demonstrations are required and/or for public speaking classes.

Screen, Browser and Application sharing

The Q-room uses a program called Glance to offer our clients Screen, Browser and Application sharing capabilities. Glance was one of the first companies to recognize a need for this feature in 2002 and is now considered the leader in their sector. Q-rooms is proud to offer their technology as a part of the Q-room environment.

Marker

Q-room's Marker can be used as a companion to Glance's screen sharing feature while also being able to find a home in the residential classroom. The Marker allows an instructor to highlight, underline, draw, upload images, save and generally do the work of an online whiteboard except it does it on any screen on the computer. It might be best described as a portable online whiteboard. It can be used in conjunction with Glance to display a computer screen to many or it can be used in a residential classroom environment when the instructor is displaying a computer screen in the front of the class through an LCD projector. The Marker takes the place of the dry eraser pens but with the advantage of being able to save ones work. Quite a handy tool for the classroom or the Q-room.

Moodle

Moodle is considered the best open-source learning management systems in the market place. At last count there were over 22,000 different installations of Moodle being used all over the world. It represents the best of what the open-source community can accomplish.

Custom Email accounts for all students and staff.

Q-rooms.com understands what schools really need, accountability and validation. Thus we provide every institution with their own email system. Each institution is recognized by having it's name in the address. Financial aid, placement, student services, admissions and all the other departments appreciate having an internal mail system that is available from any computer. The USDE will accept emails as validated documentation in most cases.

Hosting

The Q-room is a hosted environment. That means that there is no need for users to have to purchase or maintain any equipment or software. Q-rooms.com hosts the Q-room environment. The Q-room's equipment resides in a very secure data center that it shares with many of the Seat
